Dr. Mauriello, a board certified ophthalmologist, has specialized in cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid, tear duct, socket, and orbital surgery (Oculoplastic Surgery, Oculofacial Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) since 1983.
He has a particular interest in cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty, eyelid lift, eyelid tuck), the only cosmetic surgery he performs:
- Drooping upper eyelid skin that may weigh down the eyelid and interfere with vision
- Sagging, baggy lower eyelids and cheek tissues
Cosmetic Lower Blepharoplasty
Dr. Mauriello has developed special techniques to rejuvenate the lower eyelid and upper cheek. Using his published "3-step technique," the lower lid bags are removed from an incision inside the eyelid and the upper cheek is elevated as part of his standard lower eyelid lift. These techniques are unique and difficult to explain on this website.
Rather than using an incision across the whole lower eyelid, Dr, Mauriello makes a small skin incision in the outer corner of the lower lid and tightens the lower lid with a single suture technique. Surgery is performed with a carbon dioxide laser that contracts the overlying skin at the time of surgery so that very little skin is removed. The laser forms a smaller more natural template of the lower lid. The skin gradually tightens 3 to 6 months after surgery and elevates the cheek. Using this same incision, he is able to tighten and redrape the lower lid and upper cheek to elevate the skin. Symmetry is restored and the shape of the eyes is not changed. Scarring has not been a problem because of the small incision technique. As shown below, he is able to tighten and redrape the lower lid and upper cheek to elevate the skin. (See Patient Results)
Due to continued contracture from the laser, the upper cheek is more elevated at 6 months as compared to 3 months as shown dramatically in this patient.
Dr. Mauriello has used Botox since 1983 and was one of the original investigators under the FDA protocol before the drug was approved for use.
