Importance of Skin Care

Patients may learn about skin care from Dr. Mauriello's text, Beautiful Skin
Skin care is important to protect the aging skin whether or not eyelid or facial rejuvenation is performed.  It assumes, perhaps, greater importance after surgery in order to enhance the result and prevent further loss of skin elasticity and tone.  Excellent skin care helps homogenize the skin, soften it, and greatly enhances the overall effect of cosmetic eyelid surgery as known as blepharoplasty.

Fractional Carbon Dioxide Laser Resurfacing
The Encore Ultrapulse Laser by Lumenis introduced in 2007 improves:
-skin tone
- tightens skin and reduces wrinkles
-improves skin texture, dsychromia(s) dark facial pigment spots on the face,
and clarifies the skin.  (please refer to link:  Photos of  actual patients

This rejuvenation is achieved without the downtime of traditional cardon dioxide laser resurfacing.  The "bridge carbon dioxide laser technique" treats large areas of the skin but spares intervening some portions of the skin in order to minimize recovery time.  This therapy was introduced in 2007 by Lumenis.  Treatment may be individualized to treat sun damage and surperfical wrinkles and deep wrinkles, pigment spots, and scars with Active FX, MaxFX, or a combination of TotalFX.

PROTECTION AGAINST SUN DAMAGE
Sunblock better than sunscreen
Skin photoaging or sun damage occurs due to ultraviolet light, both the UVA and UVB rays.  The UVB rays cause burning and the UVA rays, the longer rays, cause photoaging.  Sun damage results in wrinkles, dark blotches, freckles, leathery skin texture, sagging skin with loss of elasticity, and increased incidence of skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and even malignant melanoma.  It is important to use a sunblock, a physical barrier, since it provides broader protection against sun damage than a sunscreen (little or no protection against the long UVA rays) and is metabolized (broken down) by the skin's outer epidermis.  The metabolism of the sunscreen may result in an allergic reaction to the sunscreen.  Sun blocks are physical screens and, therefore, are not broken down by the skin to cause allergies.

The ideal sunblock is transparent zinc oxide
The importance of a sun block cannot be overemphasized.  The most comon chemical suncreen, octyl methoxycinnamate (omc), blocks the burning UVB rays but not the UVA rays.  Such products are less effective.

Depigmenting Agents  are helpful in reducing unwanted dark circles around the eye and other patches on the face.

Office chemical peels
Presently, Dr. Mauriello recommend facial chemicals peels that he performs in the office.  These treatments are well tolerated and obviate the need for application of multiple creams.  Patients undergo the office peels at 2 to 4 month intervals and continue with an appropriate sun block and moisturizer of their choice.

Dr. Mauriello will inform you of the best time to start all skin care after surgery.  The treatments require perseverance.  Effects from products are usually noticeable after 6-8 weeks.

As improved products become available, Dr. Mauriello will make them available to his patients in the office.
